Lunch prices increasing by 5 cents in R-III district

Record Staff Writer Even with a newly approved 5-cent increase for next school year, the price of lunch at R-III schools is still among the best bargains around for families trying to make sure their kids get a wholesome, healthy protein-packed midday meal. At its May 8 meeting, the R-III school board unanimously voted to follow the recommendations of the district’s food services department to raise daily lunch prices by a nickel for the 2014-2015 school year. “The USDA and DESE require our district to charge a weighted average of $2.65 per paid lunch,” R-III Food Services Director Debbie Linke told the board. “Right now if we weight our meals between the elementary and secondary schools, we’re at $2.58, so we ultimately need to increase our price by 7 cents.” Linke told board members she had a DESE reviewer in recently to evaluate the program. The official’s advice was to increase the price by 5 cents per lunch next school year and 2 cents the following school year to spread out the difference. For students in grades kindergarten through fifth, the current lunch price of $2.50 increases to $2.55 in the fall. For students in grades six through high school, the price per lunch increases from $2.65 to $2.70. Linke said the district does not need to change breakfast pricing, which she said “is right on target” for federal and state standards. The current price of breakfast for K-12 is $1.50.
