Where were all of the voters last Tuesday? April elections never seem to draw people out, according to Warren County Clerk Barb Daly, whose office reported voter turnout at only 11 percent, with just over 2,400 ballots cast countywide. That’s a slow voting day, considering there are more than 22,217 people registered to vote in the county. So why didn’t people vote in the municipal election, which had races for aldermen, school boards, fire/ambulance boards and a contested mayoral race? Yes, it was a slim ballot in some areas, but these races have real impact on our daily lives. These city officials will be making decisions on how our cities and schools are run.Is it indifference or was the ballot just not exciting enough to get up a little earlier or find time during the day to cast a ballot? Research tells us that people only tend to focus on issues that are the highest profile and that generate the most attention. Since most local elections aren’t tied to statewide or presidential elections, the excitement is just not there, and that’s sad.In the U.S. and in Warren County, we take democracy for granted. The health of our nation and community depends both on candidates seeking office and voters showing up on Election Day.
