Library to open by May but Warrenton project delayed

Posted

The new Scenic Regional Library branch in Wright City is expected to be complete by May 2018, according to Director Steve Campbell.

“This will be great timing because we will be able to have the branch open for our Summer Reading Program, which begins June 1,” Campbell said in an email.

Crews have poured a concrete slab and erected a steel frame at the building site, just south of Wright City West Elementary. Campbell said the next step will be to enclose the frame so contractors can focus on the interior. They will be able to work through the winter months.

Scenic Regional Library purchased the land for the new branch from Wright City R-II School District in 2015. Once the building opens, it will offer a new resource for the school district, which also has its middle school and high school nearby.

“With the library being so close to the school, I expect that we will be working with them quite a bit once we have staff in place,” Campbell said.

He added that the library works with its local school districts to allow parents to get a library card for their children when they enroll in school. Once the Wright City branch opens, Campbell said he hopes to make the same arrangement with the Wright City School District.

Warrenton delay

An expansion of the Warrenton library branch has encountered a delay that will set the project back by about a month, Campbell said.

“We need to excavate some soil adjacent the existing building and re-fill it,” he explained. “This is going to involve having to fortify the foundation of the existing building, which will take some time.”

He said the Warrenton project will hopefully be complete by August 2018.

A large portion of the Warrenton library’s parking lot has been torn out as part of the work, blocking the building’s main entrance. A temporary entrance is in use on the west side of the building.

Scenic Regional Library District has ongoing construction projects at seven total locations. Updated photos from those projects can be found at the Scenic Regional Library website,  scenicregional.org.
