The Scenic Regional Library Warren County Branch will host an event Tuesday, Oct. 3, at 6 p.m. about ghostly encounters at the old Missouri State Penitentiary in Jefferson City.
The Missouri State Penitentiary building is rich in infamous history. It was once the largest prison in the United States. At its peak, it was home to 5,200 inmates.
Time magazine once called it the “bloodiest 47 acres in America” because so many murders and assaults were happening there.
Having served the state from 1836 to 2004, it has many stories to tell. The stories that have persisted are about strange occurrences like apparitional sightings and odd, unexplained sounds and events.
Melanie Benz and Tom Wells will speak at the library’s free event. They have performed ghost tours, ghost hunts and overnight investigations at the penitentiary for several years.
Wells also has participated in TV shows featuring the penitentiary, including “Ghost Hunters.”
Benz and Wells will share many ghostly stories from the Missouri State Penitentiary.
Scenic Regional Library Warren County Branch is located at 912 S. Highway 47 in Warrenton.
