Scenic Regional Library will host a program next week on women participating in the Civil War.Titled “If It Looks Like a Man: Gender Identity, Female Soldiers and Lady Bushwhackers in the Civil War,” The presentation will be held Tuesday, Aug. 19, from 6-7:30 p.m. and feature historian Diane Eickhoff. There is no admission charge.Hundreds of women cut their hair, bound their breasts, donned men’s clothing, and reported to Union or Confederate army recruiters. Others served as scouts and spies. The presentation explores how women defied traditional expectations for proper female conduct during Missouri’s Civil War.Funding for the program is being provided by the Missouri Humanities Council.To sign up to attend or for more information, contact the library at 636-456-3321 or visit www.scenicregional.org.
