This year the Scenic Regional Library Warren County Branch is emphasizing community with its summer reading program. The program has numerous activities and reading for children and adults.Build a Better World is the theme, so it seemed natural to make giving part of the program, said Kerry Christian, adult programmer at the Warren County Library.“Everybody should be giving back to the community,” she said. “We’ll never have a better world if we don’t.”Christain reached out to local charities and tried to pick organizations that needed items, not just cash donations, and settled on six representing children, victims of violence and unwanted animals. Each organization provided a wish list of the items their clients need. The lists are available to the public.Christain said the collection is about building a better world starting in one’s own community, and the library is a good place to bring people together to do good things for the community.“The library is so much more than books,” she said. It’s also a place where the community gathers to talk, learn and have fun, she said. The collection program will run from June 4 through Sept. 8.Operation Backpack and Turning Point drives start during the first half of June. The Operation Backpack collection runs from June 6-9, July 24-28 and Sept. 4-8. The organization collects food for children in Warren County who might otherwise go hungry. These are children who rely on free or reduced meals at school, but don’t have enough to eat during the weekend.Operation Backpack requests canned fruit, fruit cups, pudding cups, granola and cereal bars, fruit snacks, raisin boxes, applesauce cups, bottled water, single-serve cereals, pop tarts, juice boxes, canned or microwavable soup, Spaghettios, macaroni and cheese, microwavable meals and individual cookies and snacks.Items for Turning Point will be collected June 12-16 and July 31 to Aug. 4. Turning Point provides shelter and services for victims of domestic violence and sexual assault.Turning Point believes that people have the right to live free from violence, and seeks to reduce the incidents of domestic violence and sexual assault and the devastating effect it has on the lives of victims and their children. The organization strives to provide a safe haven and services for victims as well as educating the general public.Turning Point needs toilet paper, paper towels, facial tissues, laundry detergent, dish detergent, kitchen and bath cleaners, hand soap, tampons, Midol, shampoo and conditioner, body wash, makeup for a variety of ethnicities and skin tones, hair brushes, hair bands, combs, haircolor, toothpaste, deodorant, dental floss, aspirin, Tylenol, Tylenol p.m., ibuprofen, Pepto Bismal, anti-constipation, cough medicine, anti-histimines, coffee and filters, tea bags, sugar, bread, crackers, and frozen meat bundles.Four other organizations are part of the collection program. They are Pals Animal Shelter, St. Louis Crisis Nursery, Jordan’s Place and the Animal Welfare Association of Warren County (AWA). Those collections start later this month and in August.Donations should be dropped off at the Warren County Library, where labeled boxes will be waiting.A compete list of the organizations, donation dates and items needed is available on the library’s Facebook page and at the front desk at the library, 912 S.
