Library celebrates expansion with groundbreaking

Madge Flake was one of around two dozen people who eagerly attended the groundbreaking ceremony for the renovations at the Warrenton branch of the Scenic Regional Library on Saturday. As the incoming president of the Friends of the Library organization and the librarian at Wright City Middle School, she is excited about the changes set to take place over the next year. The Warrenton Library, which was built in 2001, will undergo expansion to accommodate growing demand for more public meeting space.“In 2014, we asked voters to approve a tax increase so that we could provide better and larger facilities and even more services,” said Director of Scenic Regional Libraries Steve Campbell. “They responded with a resounding ‘yes,’ and now we’re excited to be fulfilling that promise to voters.”The new facility, to be built on the north and east parts of the property, will have a 1,460-square-foot meeting room that will accommodate at least 110 adults. It will have upgraded seating along with the addition of outdoor seating, which can be used for story time or other programming during nice weather. Both the children and teen areas will be expanded and two study rooms will be added for one-to-one tutoring. One of the bigger concerns, Campbell shared, has been the limited amount of parking during larger events, causing overflow into the adjacent businesses.“We’ll be doubling the amount of on-site parking, increasing it to around 90 spaces,” said Campbell.Among the guest speakers at the groundbreaking were outgoing Friends of the Library President Charlotte Bradshaw, Southern District Commissioner Hubie Kluesner and Warrenton Mayor Eric Schleuter.“The amenities they provide are tremendous,” said Schleuter. “Even free internet for people who can’t afford it or who are down on their luck. They still have resources they can use for free. We need to capitalize on that.”The groundbreaking for the library came less than four weeks after the public announcement of a new park across the road at the intersection of Warrior Avenue and Highway 47.Warrenton also is anticipating the addition of its new interchange.“The expansion is going to be huge for us,” said Schlueter. “We’re a growing community, and this is an exciting part of that.”
