Liberty Christian senior Savannah Cantrell will continue her volleyball career at Missouri Baptist University next season.
Cantrell signed her letter of intent in a ceremony Friday morning.
“It’s been a goal and a dream of mine since I started playing volleyball in seventh grade, but I never thought it would be a reality,” she said. “But now that it is, it’s unreal.”
Cantrell, an outside hitter, helped lead Liberty Christian to back-to-back third-place finishes in the Missouri Christian Schools Athletic Association state tournament her final two seasons.
“She’s a solid, hard-worker,” third-year Liberty Christian Head Coach Bryan Spencer said. “She’s always doing the little things, as well as playing club sports, which helps.”
Cantrell narrowed her college choices down to Missouri Baptist, Central Methodist University and Culver-Stockton College.
She decided on Missouri Baptist after meeting with the coaching staff and touring the campus.
“I really loved the Christian atmosphere,” she said. “It’s a smaller size, so I like the idea of transferring over to a school like that.”
Cantrell, who said her favorite high school memories are playing in the MCSAA state tournament, will join a Spartans program that finished second in the NAIA national tournament last season while posting a 39-5 record.
She said Missouri Baptist Head Coach Chris Nichols ultimately made her decision an easy one.
“The coaching staff is just awesome,” she said. “They really want the best for you as a person, and as a player.”
Cantrell said she wants to get in better shape between now and the beginning of the season in August.
Spencer hopes she develops a mean streak over the summer.
“She’s a really nice person but I wish she would be a little bit meaner,” he said with a grin. “It’s all about attitude on the court. She needs to turn into a monster, and I think she can.”
