Students of Liberty Christian Academy in Wright City were named as winners in the Voice of Democracy and Patriot’s Pen contests for various Veterans of Foreign Wars District 9 Posts. They will advance to the next level of competition in hopes of claiming a $30,000 scholarship and a trip to Washington, D.C.
Students who placed in local Voice of Democracy contests are listed below by hometown, name, grade, and placing.
Elsberry - Rhiannon Meyer, 11th grade, 1st place.
New Melle - Allissa Schneider, 9th grade, 1st place.
Wentzville - Jeremiah Fox, 12th grade, 1st place.
Winfield - James Chemin, 11th grade, 1st place.
Troy - Jason Hain, 11th grade, 1st place. Joy Kassebaum, 10th grade, 2nd place.
Wellsville - Austin Kuehn, 11th grade, 3rd place.
Fulton - Gracie Foran 11th grade, 1st place.
Warrenton - Reagan Lee, 9th grad, 1st place. Kara Roden 9th grade, 2nd place. Adison Roden, 11th grade, 3rd place.
Montgomery – Sarah Brumagin, 12th grade, 1st place.
Students who placed in a local Patriot’s Pen contests are listed below by hometown, name, grade, and placing.
New Melle - Landon McCarthy, 8th grade, 1st place.
Montgomery - Jublilation Nowlan, 8th grade, 1st place.
Wentzville - Shea Lee, 8th grade, 1st place.
Winfield - Lydia Chemin, 8th grade, 1st place.
Students grade 9-12 must write and record a three-to-five-minute essay on the selected theme using an audio CD or flash drive and present their recording, typed essay and completed entry form to their local VFW Post. Students grade 6-8 must write a 300-500 word essay. “Is This the Country the Founders Envisioned?” is the 2021 theme for Voice of Democracy and “What is Patriotism to Me?” is the Patriot’s Pen theme. Local Post level selects their winners, then Post winners compete at the District level with the winner advancing to the state competition.
All local winners received a cash prize and a certificate and will compete at the District Level. District winners will receive cash prizes and advance to the state. All state first-place winners receive a four-day trip to Washington, D.C., and the chance to compete for their share of more than $150,000 in scholarships. The first-place winner receives a $30,000 college scholarship.
