Liberty Christian prepared for MCSAA state tournament

The Liberty Christian girls basketball team was given the No. 2 seed in this year’s Missouri Christian Schools Athletic Association 2A Tournament.

The Eagles play No. 5 Overland Thursday at 4:30 p.m. in Joplin.

“We haven’t played this team yet,” Liberty Christian Head Coach Matt Voss said. “But I feel like we can win this game and get to the winner’s bracket.”

The Eagles are led by senior guard Matilyn Voss, who leads the team with 21.3 points and 5.5 rebounds and has helped lead the team to a 13-14 record going into the postseason.

“She is really excited about her last few high school games,” Matt Voss said. “So I think she will come out strong.”

Despite having limited information on his team’s first-round opponent, Matt Voss believes his team can win two games and play for a championship Saturday morning.

Westwood Baptist, which beat Liberty Christian by a combined six points this season, earned the No. 1 seed in the tournament.

The Eagles are coming off three straight losses in the Metro Athletic Conference, but Matt Voss said he was gearing his team up for the state tournament.

“We should have better luck against some of those smaller schools in the state tournament,” he said recently.

Voss has liked what he’s seen from his post players of late, especially senior forward Kaylen Jordan.

Jordan averages 6.4 points and 5.1 rebounds per game, and has helped alleviate some pressure from Matilyn Voss.

Matt Voss said Jordan will need to have a big tournament if his team wants to compete for a championship.

“We played a little scared in the conference games and did not execute well, but anything can happen at state,” he said.

The Eagles are guaranteed games Friday and Saturday regardless of the outcome of their first-round game.

The championship is set for Saturday at 8:30 a.m.

“It is really up to the girls,” Matt Voss said. “If they believe in themselves, they can win it.”
