The Liberty Christian girls basketball team was as happy as it had been all season following Monday’s 62-56 home win over Bethel Christian Academy.
The Eagles (11-9) avenged a 20-point loss at Bethel Dec. 14, and Head Coach Matt Voss watched a team that hardly resembled the squad he saw the first day of practice.
“The older players are just stronger and better, and they’re beginning to work together,” he said. “Then we’ve been able to filter in the younger girls.”
Since adding senior guard Kayley Hulverson to the team in early January, the Eagles have won five of their last six games and three in a row.
Hulverson’s presence has created a domino effect for the Eagles, which no longer rely solely on senior guard Matilyn Voss, who averages 21.8 points and scored 25 Monday night.
“We have an outlet to go to now at the guard spot,” Matt Voss said. “Jenna (Grow) gets pressured sometimes being just an eighth-grader, but Kayley can hold her own right now and that is huge for us.”
Monday night, Hulverson pressured the Bethel guards for the length of the court, which helped neutralize Bethel’s size by speeding the game up.
She was also able to free up Grow for scoring opportunities as the Bethel defense zeroed in on her and Voss.
Grow and Hulverson finished with 11 points each.
And when the Liberty Christian offense was in halfcourt sets, Matt Voss noticed a new threat in the paint, as well.
“I told Kaylen (Jordan) that this was one of the best games I’ve seen her play,” Matt Voss said.
Jordan, a senior forward, averages six points per game and finished with eight points Monday night.
“We won’t go anywhere without her because we don’t have another strong post player,” Matt Voss said. “She’s gotten better and we can get her the ball more now. She’s really confident right now, which is a big key for us.”
The Eagles travel to Providence Classical Christian Friday night and finish the regular season Tuesday at home against Westwood Baptist.
“I think the girls are really beginning to think they can win, so I’m looking forward to them finishing strong,” Matt Voss said. “I told them I think this is the beginning of something great in the next three or four weeks heading into districts and state.”
