With each challenge that has come their way this season, Liberty Christian veterans Avery Dickson and Matilyn Voss have swung back with a vengeance. The Eagles have found themselves undergoing a dramatic identity change since the beginning of the season, losing three original players before gaining two others following the semester break.Voss and her teammates continued to power through that adversity on Tuesday, downing Crosspoint Christian 57-33.“We hadn’t done a press in a while, so we tried one that worked out well and that kind of got our players pumped up, because they were capitalized on our defense,” said first-year Coach Sara Gibson, who has been stressing camaraderie from day one.“The main thing we’ve been working on is how to become more of a team,” said Voss. “She wants us to pick each other up, not only on mistakes but to encourage one another through everything.”All the while she has called on Voss to be a leader beyond her 26 points a game.“The girls that started the beginning of the year and the team we have now are completely different,” said Voss. “We’ve had a lot of hardships attacking our teams, so it’s been awesome to see new players start to come along.”After a lackluster first quarter that saw the Eagles deadlocked in a 14-14 tie, Gibson questioned Voss on her unusual lack of assertiveness.“I called Matilyn over during a free throw, because she wasn’t as intense as usual,” said Gibson. “I asked her to put the team on her back like she usually does, and she responded.”Liberty Christian unloaded 20 points in the second quarter to build a 34-19 lead by halftime.“Once we actually got into a rhythm and started capitalizing on those turnovers and layups, then we started having more fun and playing loose,” said Gibson.Voss finished 27 points, while Dickson added 26.The Eagles continued to attack with pressure in the second half, scoring basket after basket in transition.“It’s cool to see the veterans adjust to what’s happening around us,” said Gibson. “It’s encouraging to see them battle through that.”Liberty Christian will return to action on Saturday afternoon with a conference meeting against Rivers of Life.KIRBY BATTLES FOR REBOUNDDerrick Forsythe photo.
