Liberty Christian’s non-conference meeting with Families of Faith Christian Academy ended in a 6-6 tie Friday after rain made the field unplayable.
The Eagles fought back from a 5-0 first-inning deficit, scoring two runs in the fifth and another in the sixth before the rain fell.
“Our slow start cost us the game,” said Liberty Christian Assistant Coach Jeremy Russell, who filled in for Head Coach Ron Dickson.
“I feel if we could have continued, we would have gotten them.”
Trailing 6-5 in the bottom of the sixth with a runner on first, Jake Pietzman singled to center and advanced to second on an error.
With runners on second and third, Kaleb Bagby hit a rocket to the Families of Faith shortstop, who knocked the ball down but couldn’t make a play at first in time.
Dakota Ball scored to even the game at six.
“That was Kaleb being Kaleb,” Russell said. “Every game he does something that makes you say, ‘Wow.’ ”
Liberty Christian starting pitcher Andrew Voss worked around five unearned runs in the first two innings, striking out five and giving up three hits in four innings of work.
Families of Faith scored four runs in the first inning on two hits, thanks to a Liberty Christian defense that committed four errors on the afternoon.
“As a team we came out a little slow and got rattled,” Russell said. “Andrew really took control after that. He threw lots of first-pitch strikes and he was hitting his spots. Going forward, he is going to be a huge piece for us.”
Bagby led the Eagles with two hits and a pair of RBIs.
Voss picked up the Eagles’ only extra-base hit, notching a double in the fifth inning.
Russell said Families of Faith is one of the best teams Liberty Christian (5-1-1) will face all season.
“We let one get away from us at Crosspoint,” he said. “Going forward we have a chance to be very special. Our pitching will improve even more, and with our bats heating, up that’s a very deadly combo for us as we look toward the state championships.”
