Liberty Christian earns pair of conference wins

The Liberty Christian boys basketball team defeated Rivers of Life 75-49 during Metro Athletic Conference action at home on Saturday.

The Eagles led 14-8 after one quarter and 34-20 by halftime.

Senior Calvin Edwards led the Eagles with 21 points and 12 rebounds, while senior Tanner Meyer scored 19 points and 11 boards.

Eighth-grader Andrew Voss added 14 points, knocking down four three-pointers.

Jake Pietzman netted 11 points.

The Eagles will host Eagle Ridge of Cape Girardeau on Friday and welcome Jefferson on Saturday.

Wright City 68, Owensville 64 (OT): The Wildcats won a nonconference game during overtime on the road Monday.

Wright City trailed 17-12 after one quarter and 35-22 by halftime.

An offensive outburst in the third period helped the Wildcats take a one-point lead into the fourth quarter.

The game was deadlocked at 58 at the end of regulation.

Seniors Bret Noble and Ty Davis led the Wildcats, each scoring 24.

Tyrel Curtis scored 10 points and Luke Bruning netted seven.

Clopton Tournament: The Wright City boys basketball team was diverted to the third-place game after losing a back-and-forth contest to No. 1 seed Louisiana 69-67 last Thursday.

There were four lead changes in the final minutes, but a pair of turnovers proved costly for the Wildcats, who knocked down eight three- pointers.

Wright City led 11-9 after one quarter, before Louisiana tore open an 11-point lead moments before halftime.

Senior Bret Noble hit one of his four treys to close the gap to 33-26 at intermission.

He would knock down another to help the Wildcats take a 48-47 advantage into the fourth quarter.

Wright City went ahead by four, but Louisiana recaptured the lead with 50 seconds and again with 20 seconds remaining.

Ty Davis scored 14 points, while Christian Thompson added 11 and Chance Ludy scored 10.

Warrenton Tournament: The Warrenton boys basketball team lost 65-49 to No. 1 seed Fort Zumwalt West in the semifinal contest of the Warriors’ host tournament last Thursday.

The Warriors battled back after having fallen behind 9-2.

Senior Alec Tonioli cut the margin to 18-14 with a halfcourt buzzer-beater to end the first quarter.

Zumwalt West led 27-23 at halftime and would cushion their lead in the final two quarters,  leading by as much as 18.

Tonioli led the Warriors with 22 points, while senior Craig Vardiman added 10 points and 18 rebounds.

GIRLS

BASKETBALL

Liberty Christian 59, Rivers of Life 33: The Eagles won a conference home game on Saturday.

Liberty Christian led 16-14 after one quarter and extended it to 36-19 by halftime.

Matilyn Voss led the Eagles with 27 points, while Avery Dickson added 26 points.

Warrenton 50, Fort Zumwalt North 44: The Warriors won a home contest last Thursday.

Warrenton led 16-8 after one quarter and 31-20 by halftime.

Zumwalt North stormed back in the third period to close the gap to 41-34.

Senior Hannah Sutton scored a game-high 19 points, knocking down a pair of treys.

Sophomore Jenny Jansen scored 11 points, while classmate Kaylee Anderson added 10 points.

Senior Kylie Toebben chipped in nine points, as the Warriors went 16 of 28 from the free-throw line during a very physical game.
