Liberty Christian boys unable to match opponent's physicality

Used to being the ones imposing its will upon opponents in a high-paced, physical game, the Liberty Christian boys basketball team found itself in unfamiliar territory in more than one way on Friday. The Eagles fell 79-47 during a non-conference road trip to North County Christian, struggling to overcome the aggressiveness thrown its way.“They beat us up and down the court, bumping the entire game,” said Coach Butch Clark. “Nothing was getting called, and when the game gets played like that, it’s not going to be good.”Liberty Christian led 15-13 after one quarter but quickly saw the game get out of hand on a night when shots simply weren’t falling.“We couldn’t buy a bucket,” said Clark. “We had four short-range shots on one trip go in and out. It was just one of those days where nothing was going our way.”The Eagles saw their last lead fade with a few minutes remaining in the half, trailing 35-27 at the break. Liberty Christian, which typically shoots 27 percent from beyond the arc as a team, knocked down just one of 24 outside attempts.“I thought we would match up real well,” said Clark, who recalled a stretch when the game took a turn.“They forced three straight turnovers on the bump and run, and that was when it got away from us,” said Clark. His team, desperate to stay in contention, increased its physicality and put the clamps on its limited depth against a team with a deeper bench.“We got down and started fouling, which didn’t help us,” said Clark. “They were able to run players in and out constantly.”Senior point guard Tanner Meyer struggled to find any open lanes or looks at the basket, finishing just 3 of 19 from the field on a 12-point night. The Eagles had just four players score, as they faced a 50-44 after three quarters.Sophomore Jake Pietzman netted a team-best 14 points, while senior Calvin Edwards scored 11 points and grabbed 22 rebounds.“We accomplished what we wanted, which was to play a hard-fought scrappy game in a hostile venue,” said Clark. “But they’re not 30 points better than us.”He says he’s still extremely pleased with where the Eagles are at this point in the season, carrying a 20-7 record into the Metro Athletic Conference Tournament this week.“I didn’t feel like last season we were tested enough when we went into the postseason,” said Clark. “I knew the backside of our schedule was tough, and that was by design. When I set up the schedule I wanted to end the season with tough competition.”EAGLES OVERPOWERED AT NORTH COUNTY CHRISTIANDerrick Forsythe photo.
