The Liberty Christian boys basketball team wasn’t perfect Tuesday, but it waould be hard to find much fault with the Eagles.
Hosting an undermanned Eagle Ridge Christian squad out of Cape Girardeau, Liberty steamrolled to the 98-49 win.
Senior forward Willy Mueller took full advantage of the overwhelming size and quickness displayed by the host squad as the 6-foot-3 forward tallied 19 points, 19 rebounds, and six assists for Liberty (7-0).
“We just go out and want to stay undefeated every day,” Mueller said. “We want to work hard, grow closer together in God and, hopefully, win state. We just have to keep working.”
That hard-nosed work ethic was evident from the get-go on Tuesday as Liberty rolled to leads of 35-6 after the first quarter and 58-22 by halftime.
Liberty coach Butch Clark said that, while the effort wasn’t perfect, it was a game where a perfect mental approach would prove very difficult.
“We had a few lapses where we got careless with the ball,” Clark said. “That’s hard not to do (in this type of game). Other than that, I thought we really did (stay sharp).”
In addition to Mueller, junior guard Phoenix Obermann led the offense with 25 points while senior forward Tommy Meyer pitched in 18 and junior guard Ryder Carlisle was the fourth Liberty player in double figures with 10 points.
Liberty will next head to Calvary Lutheran in Jefferson City for a game on Monday. The opening tip is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
“We have a couple of games next week where we’re really going to see where we’re at as a team,” Clark said.
HERMANN 44, WRIGHT CITY 25 – The Wright City boys basketball team opened the 2025-26 season with a tough home loss.
A 19-3 deficit by the end of the first quarter turned into a 27-11 halftime deficit, and the Wildcats wouldn’t recover.
Kaveon Schulte led the Wildcats with six points.
