The Liberty Christian boys’ basketball team opened play in the Missouri Christian Schools Athletic Association (MCSAA) Division I state tournament on Thursday, and the team started the event with a bang.
In its 85-42 win over Centerplace Restoration School, the Eagles led 39-7 after the first quarter, and the rout was on.
Liberty senior forward Willy Mueller said he hopes that the first quarter is a sign of things to come over the next three days as the team chases a championship.
“Hopefully, we can keep our foot on the gas and not let up,” Mueller said. “We played as a team today, and we need to keep playing as a team if we want to win.”
Liberty, indeed, played as a team as nine Eagles made their way into the scorebook. Mueller’s 22-point, nine-rebound game led the effort.
Senior forward Tommy Meyer added 20 points, and junior guard Phoenix Obermann added 18 in the win.
Liberty coach Butch Clark said that seeing the way the team played in the first quarter was a welcome sight at the state tournament.
“The kids played an all-around game today,” Clark said. “The first quarter was electric.”
Up next, Liberty will take on No. 2 seed Plaza Heights from Blue Springs at 3 p.m. on Friday. The Lions own a 29-3 record.
“We haven’t played anybody like them,” Clark said. “They shoot 25 to 30 3-pointers a game and that will be a real challenge.”
The winner of that game will move into the state championship game on Saturday afternoon in Joplin.
