Liberty Christian beats LPA to win second straight

The Liberty Christian Eagles used a strong first half performance to cruise to a win over Lifehouse Prep Academy last week.

Liberty Christian (6-17) outscored Lighthouse Prep by 26 points in the first half in their 78-67 win last week. Liberty Christian led 24-8 after the first quarter and led 52-26 at halftime.

“I thought we ran the court pretty good,” Liberty Christian basketball coach Butch Clark said. “We shot well. We started trapping a little bit. That’s something we’re going to try to do down the stretch.”

Clark said last week’s game was the first game the Eagles introduced a half court zone trap. He said the Liberty Christian players have good instincts in the passing lanes. He thinks the Eagles should be able to find success with the trap defense.

“I thought they did ok on it,” Clark said. “They don’t quite have all the rotations down on it and playing the passing lanes. We got caught on the sideline a couple times on blocking fouls which we shouldn’t have gotten. I think we’re quick enough to do it.”

The Eagles faced a press defense from Lighthouse Prep the majority of the game. Clark thinks the Eagles handled the press well throughout the game and were able to generate offensive opportunities after breaking the press.

“I thought we did a good job when they pressed us,” Clark said. “We broke it and scored several times. I was pleased with that. I think the first five that played did really well. We had a few guys that came off the bench that did a pretty good job too.”

Five different Eagles scored in the first quarter to help Liberty Christian get out to an early lead. Zach Dames and Jack Duvel each scored seven points in the opening quarter. Duvel led the Eagles with 12 second quarter points, including a stretch of scoring seven of nine Liberty Christian points to put Liberty Christian up 48-21.

Liberty Christian led Lighthouse Prep 72-45 after the third quarter and started the fourth quarter on a 6-2 run to lead 78-47 early on in the quarter. With several Liberty Christian starters out of the game, Lighthouse Prep ended the game on a 20-0 run.

Duvel led the Eagles with 31 points. He also hauled in six rebounds and had four assists. Dames and Tommy Meyer also reached double figures in points in the win. Meyer scored 17 points, while Dames added 15 points. Dames led the Eagles with eight assists. Willie Mueller secured 15 rebounds for Liberty Christian.

Liberty Christian is scheduled to host Rivers of Life Christian Friday.
