Record Managing EditorA service recognizing current POW/MIAs will be held this Friday in Warrenton. The American Legion Riders Chapter 122 is sponsoring the ceremony starting at 7 p.m. at the Legion hall, located at 28855 Legion Trail Lane off Highway W.The event will include a posting of the colors by the Richard Scott Haymes Marine Corp Detachment 1393, the laying of wreaths, a 21-gun salute and a bagpiper. Warrenton Mayor Eric Schleuter is serving as the guest speaker and Warren County Assistant Prosecuting Attorney Andrew Bailey is the keynote speaker. In addition, the meaning of a special POW/MIA table that will be on display will be presented.Tino Patti, a member of the Legion riders, encourages the public to attend.“We’re trying to raise awareness,” he said. “We want to remember those who suffered as POWs and their families and those who are still missing. We hope to have a lot of people out there.”Friday is National POW/MIA Recognition Day, which was first observed in 1979. This is the second year a local service is being held. Last year, Patti estimated about 50 people attended. The service will honor current prisoners of war and service members still listed as missing in action. As of July 31, the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency estimates there are more than 85,000 soldiers still missing and unaccounted for though the figure does not include World War I. Of that figure, the number of MIAs from World War II is 73,515, Korean War is 7,848, Vietnam War is 1,596 and two each from Libya and the Gulf War.“I would like more people to come out and more people to start recognizing the POW/MIAs we have had in our history,” Patti said. “It’s a never ending task to get everyone accounted for.”Friday’s ceremony is scheduled to be held outside. In the event of inclement weather, the service will be moved inside, Patti noted.POW MIA
