Many families are exploring the idea of backyard poultry on their property.Maintaining a small poultry flock can be a rewarding experience and will provide an opportunity for family members to learn about and participate in animal care.The University of Missouri Extension is offering training for raising backyard poultry from 6:30-8 p.m. Wednesday, March 8, at the University of Missouri Extension Center, 260 Brown Road in St. Peters.It will offer information for people who want to raise chickens for eggs or meat.Ken Bolte, MU Extension agriculture business/livestock specialist, will review getting started, breed selection, housing, nutrition, diseases/parasites, predator control and tips on management to assist small producers in getting the most from their backyard poultry experience.Participants will receive base reference materials as part of the program.There is a fee of $15 per family to cover reference materials and light refreshments.Preregistration by March 6 is required.
