Like any other high school golfer at this time of year, Johnathan Windmann has goals for this season – both for himself and his team.
Personally, Windmann is aiming to get himself to the Class 3 state tournament at the Sedalia Country Club in May.
As a returning player with postseason experience, Windmann wants to show the younger players on his team that hard work can pay off, whether a player makes the district or state tournament, or just enjoys their time out on the links.
“My overarching goal is to make it to state, that’s the goal for everybody,” Windmann said. “The scores are going to be higher at the beginning of the season, which comes with the weather. I just want to keep improving and be the best version of myself. That’s what I want the younger guys to know.”
Steven McClain said that there are four players returning with varsity experience in Windmann, juniors Brody Buttry and Parker Brown, and senior Aiden Taylor.
Windmann and senior Aiden Taylor are two players who the coach said will do well in guiding the younger players.
“This group is working hard to teach the younger guys, especially the little things,” McClain said. “They’re out there teaching the others things that are important because I can’t be everywhere at once. I’ve been putting Parker in with the younger groups and they’re already starting to show improvement.”to
The coach added that Windmann is showing the way, both in his actions and his play.
“John is probably going to be our No. 1 right now,” McClain said. “He’s been helping the guys with things, making sure he’s like a second coach. I think he’s got a god chance at going (to state). I think he’s the one to be able to do it. He’s just got to stay focused and be mentally tough.”
Wright City will begin its season at 3:30 p.m. on March 26 against Montgomery County.
For Taylor, he’d like to see his season unfold with successes on many different levels.
Just like everyone else who plays the sport, the senior wants to improve his game but he also wants to work hard to mentor those on the team who are younger than he is and are all approaching the game with differing levels of skill.
“My goal for this season is to represent the team and the school,” Taylor said. “I want to do well and compete at every tournament. I think when you focus too much on that stuff, it can impact how you play on the course. It’s best to play how you know you can at the end of the day and have fun.”
