FENTON – Back-to-back....to-back?
After winning consecutive Missouri Christian Schools Athletic Association State championships for the first time in school history, the goal is now a three-peat for the Liberty Christian Academy boys basketball team.
It won’t be easy.
Andrew Voss, one of the most prolific scorers in program history graduated and is now playing round ball for the Blue Jays at Westminster College in Fulton.
Voss started pumping in points for LCA as a seventh grader and ended his prep career with 2,491, good for second all-time. He averaged 29.4 points, 6.3 rebounds and 5.3 assists last year and was the offensive catalyst of both title-winning squads.
But while the current Eagles may not have an individual dumping in 30 points on a nightly basis, they do have a balanced veteran core that knows how to get to the basket.
Or at least it seemed that way in their 73-27 season-opening road win at Heritage Classical Christian Academy, the first game under new Coach Tanner Meyer, who takes the reins from Kenny Hart.
Senior forward Dakota Ball posted a double-double with 15 points and 12 rebounds, also adding four assists and five steals.
Junior post Josh Dames had a game-high 19 points. Junior Brayden Wilmsmeyer hit double digits with 13 points as did senior David Vaclavik, who had 12 points to go along with a team-best five assists and four steals.
Senior Michael Foran chipped in with six points and 12 rebounds and newcomer Cole Christian, a sophomore, had nine points, five rebounds and four assists.
LCA led the host Hawks 25-7 after the opening period and increased the advantage to 42-16 at half. It was 61-23 after the third and the Eagles outscored the hosts 12-4 in the fourth quarter.
The Eagles shot 51 percent from the floor, hitting on 34-of-67 shots and going 3-for-13 from behind the 3-point line. They coaxed 14 steals and turned the ball over 12 times.
Now 1-0 and riding a six-game win streak dating back to February of last season, the Eagles will face a much tougher test when Granite City’s Rivers of Life Christian visits in Friday’s home opener.
Rivers of Life (2-0) will be gunning for revenge after dropping to LCA in two straight state championship games.
