Lawrence "Larry" Holmes

Posted

Larry Holmes, dedicated father, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend, passed away unexpectedly on August 15, 2022.

Larry was born on September 30, 1934. He grew up in a large family on a Minnesota farm. There, he learned the meaning of "an honest day's work." At the age of 17, he tried to join the Army. His mother could not allow him to join at such an early age, and she brought him back home. A year later, at the age of 18, he joined the Air Force, eager to see the world. He met Christa, the love of his life, while stationed in England. They married and had three children, Susan, Frank and Jeff. As a family, they traveled far and wide. Larry retired from the Air Force and began a new chapter in life with McDonald Douglas.

Larry was a devoted husband and father; he provided for his family and gave them the life he felt they deserved. Family meant more to him than anything else. Larry was a kind and giving man that would help everyone; the person you could call day or night. He would be there for you, no judgments, only kindness and support. He was a hero facing life's challenges with a smile, and stayed strong until the end.

He is survived by his two sons, Jeff Holmes of Warrenton and Frank Holmes of Navarre Beach, FL; daughter, Susan (Mike) Painter of Wright City; many brothers and sisters; 11 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. He is preceded in death by his father, Charles Holmes; mother, Lea Holmes; and wife, Christa Holmes. He will be dearly missed by all who knew him.

Graveside services will be held on Thursday, Aug. 25 at 11:30 a.m. at the National Cemetery in Jefferson Barracks, MO. Memorials may be made to a charity of the donor's choice in care of Pitman Funeral Home, P.O. Box 126 Warrenton, MO 63383.
