The Warrenton Lady Warriors claimed a 3-1 halftime lead against St. Clair but ultimately fell to Bulldogs 4-3 last week.
After St. Clair scored a goal in the fourth minute of the game, Warrenton responded with three first half goals to take a 3-1 lead to halftime. Coryn Higby, Morgan Marschel and Camryn Petersmeyer each scored goals in the first half to give the Lady Warriors a 3-1 lead at halftime.
“That was exciting for us to be ahead,” Warrenton coach Amy Wargowsky said. “But second half, we had a defender that had to leave and then we were down some players. And we have players that have been working through injuries. We got caught.”
Wargowsky said she liked what she saw from her team to bounce back from an early St. Clair goal in the first half to take a 3-1 lead to halftime. She also liked what she saw from the team in the second half. They just could not finish, she said.
“In the second half, we were doing a lot more passing of the ball and we were making the right runs,” Wargowsky said. “And we had the opportunities. We just couldn’t finish.”
St. Clair scored two goals in the first 18 minutes of the second half to tie the game 3-3. There was no more scoring in the half until there was 1:02 left in regulation. St. Clair freshman Lucy Moore scored with 1:02 left to give St. Clair a 4-3 lead.
Warrenton mounted one last scoring opportunity with under a minute left. The Lady Warriors were able to get a shot attempt in the box but the shot went over the crossbar.
After the game, Wargowsky stressed to the team the importance of remembering the good parts of the game and learning from the mistakes.
“I said remember the good. Learn from the bad,” Wargowsky said. “But we’ll just forget the game but take these lessons. Remember how it felt when we scored and how it felt when you made the right pass. I said remember those things and then learn what we did wrong so we can fix that next time.”
Warrenton also lost last week to district opponent Fort Zumwalt East. The Lady Warriors lost the game 8-0.
Warrenton was scheduled to play Wright City Wednesday. The game is a makeup game from Monday’s game, which was canceled.
Warrenton is scheduled to play at Sullivan today. They are slated to host Moberly tomorrow. They have road games against Union and North Point scheduled next week.
