Late filings shake up races in local elections

Posted

Candidates filing in the last week before deadline have invigorated local election races to be decided in April.

Filing closed Tuesday for local government, school board and emergency district board offices. Elections will be held April 7.

Competition heated up in Wright City, Truesdale and Innsbrook over the last week, as a number of candidates declared their intention to seek public office.

In Wright City, the race to represent Ward 1 on the board of aldermen new has for contenders. Incumbent John O’Connor registered to appear on the ballot, as did Michelle Heiliger. They join candidates Robert Hamlin and Jermaine Johnson.

Meanwhile, in Wright City’s Ward 2, only one person has filed for office. Ramiz Hakim, who would be new to the board, is the sole candidate. Current Ward 2 Alderman Tom Dixon did not file for re-election.

Wright City Mayor Dan Rowden is also unopposed for re-election.

The city of Warrenton had one last-day candidate file to compete for a seat on the board of aldermen. Newcomer Jack Crump joined the race Tuesday, and will face off against fellow newcomer Joshua Poore to represent Ward 1.

Incumbent Aldermen Scott Schulze, Ward 2, and Bob Delaloye, Ward 3, are unopposed for re-election.

In Truesdale, two late entrants have turned an uncontested election into a four-way race. Two seats are up for grabs on the city’s board of aldermen.

Newcomers Joe Brooks and Rhonda Colombo entered their names this week. They’ll compete against incumbent Mike Thomas and newcomer Rodger Wells.

Incumbent Alderman Stanley Brookshier did not file for re-election.

Four candidates are also competing for two seats on the Innsbrook Village Board of Trustees. John Simon this week joined Jerry Rust, Donna West and incumbent Ted Sator. Fellow incumbent Tom Stevener did not file.

An entrant late on the last day also brought competition to the Wright City Fire Protection District. Jodi Benoist will challenge incumbent Jeanette Woehrle for a seat on the district’s board of directors.

School board races

Elections for the Warren County R-III and Wright City R-II school boards will see challengers competing against six current board members.

R-III incumbents  Laurie Wenzel, Rodger Tucker and Franci Schwarts are challenged by newcomer Samuel Palmer for three seats on the Warren County R-III School Board.

One additional seat on the R-III board will be elected separately for a two year term. The seat was vacated by the death of Allan Dreyer. The candidates for that position are Sarah Janes and Joseph Lanigan.

In the Wright City R-II School District, incumbents Heidi Hallemann, Alice Jensen and Michael Bates are seeking re-election to the school board. Joining them in the race for three seats is Bryan Spencer, who currently serves in the Missouri House of Representatives.

Uncontested

Elections for multiple other municipal offices around Warren County only had one candidate file for each open seat. These are the uncontested elections:

Warren County Ambulance District — Diane Grimes and Jonathan D. Laubert are the only candidates for two seats on the board of directors.

Emergency Services Board — Four incumbents seek to keep their seats on the board that controls the Warren County 911 dispatch. They are Frank Stuermann, Jason Zwyers, Martha Groeper and Scott Jacob.

The Marthasville Board of Aldermen has one candidate each for two seats. Nick Lange is seeking re-election for the East Ward, while former Alderman Christopher DeVore seeks to return representing the West Ward. Gene Jenkins, the West Ward incumbent, did not file for re-election.

Marthasville Fire Protection District only has one candidate, incumbent Jim Buescher, running for one seat on its board of directors.

Marthasville Ambulance District has two incumbents filing for two seats, Alice Kluesner and Larry Brewe.
