Wright City overcame a slow start to win their season opener in three sets.
The Lady Wildcats (1-0) topped Intensity Home School in three sets. They won the three sets 25-21, 25-17, 25-16.
The Lady Wildcats fell behind 15-8 in the first set before winning 10 of the next 13 points to even the first set 18-18. Wright City volleyball coach Christine Goldsmith believes the timeout with the Lady Wildcats trailing 15-8 helped Wright City regroup and overcome the early deficit.
“I think just stopping, taking a timeout and getting them back to playing basics,” Goldsmith said. “Just start with a pass, set it up and go from there. Just take each point as they come. And just giving them a minute to breathe. I think they were all really nervous and a little bit anxious.”
The Wildcats started the second set strong, claiming a 14-4 lead. The Lady Wildcats were aided by winning the first six points of the set on Cassie Reash’s serve.
“It’s very helpful for our next set,” Goldsmith said. “It gives them that confidence that we can come out strong and then we can take that lead and run with it to the end of the game.”
After Intensity Home School trimmed the Wright City lead to three points at 18-15, the Lady Wildcats won seven of the last nine points to clinch the set.
The Lady Wildcats also claimed a commanding lead in the third set on Reash’s serve. With the Lady Wildcats holding a 11-7 lead, Wright City won 10 consecutive points on Reash’s serve en route to a 25-16 third set win.
Prior to Monday’s season opener, the Lady Wildcats had only competed in the preseason Jamboree. Goldsmith said Monday’s win gave her confidence the season will be a success. She hopes with the initial nerves gone, the Lady Wildcats can play their best volleyball the rest of the season. She stressed communication and hustle are more prevalent when the Lady Wildcats are at their best.
“They communicate a lot more and they hustle a lot more,” Goldsmith said. “When they’re all in sync, everybody’s on the same page. Everybody’s moving and talking. That’s when we play our best.”
Cayle Redmon led Wright City with seven kills. Reash and Jasmin Simpson finished tied for the team lead with five aces.
Wright City hosts Bowling Green Thursday. The varsity match is scheduled to begin at 6:30 p.m.
