After dropping a conference matchup with Elsberry last week, Wright City responded with a 10-run win over Lutheran St. Charles the following day.
Wright City (2-3) beat Lutheran St. Charles 15-5 Friday. The win followed Wright City’s 11-6 loss to Elsberry.
Wright City smacked four home runs in their win over Lutheran St. Charles. Lydia Clubb, Paige Rees, Emma Staats and Sophia Wegrzyn all hit home runs in the Lady Wildcats’ win. Clubb, Staats and Wegrzyn each had three RBIs. Clubb led the team with four runs scored. Clubb and Rees each had four hits.
After falling behind early in the matchup with Elsberry, Wright City used a five-run inning to climb back into the game. The inning was highlighted by Tori Orf’s first home run of the season. Head coach Fred Ross said seeing the Elsberry pitcher for a third time and having a better approach led to better offensive production in the late innings.
“We started laying off her high pitch which is her out pitch,” Ross said. “The hard part coming from the game we had two nights ago, the pitches were really slow. So that took us a little bit to get it. Our top part of the order made contact. Our younger kids struggled a little bit. But the third time after seeing her a little bit, we laid off the high pitch and started making some contact.”
Despite falling behind early, Ross liked that the Lady Wildcats battled back in the game. He believes this will help Wright City later in the season.
Ross noted the top four Elsberry batters hit the ball well. Wright City also had a couple errors and a couple balls they could have caught that aided the Indian offensive attack.
“We’ll keep working on that,” Ross said. “I’ve got a bunch of young kids and a bunch of new players. (Abby) Vossen’s out so I had to move some players around tonight.”
Orf hit the lone Wright City home run in the game against Elsberry. Clubb led the Lady Wildcats with four hits. Clubb and Paige Rees each hit one double. Staats, Wegrzyn and Tristyn Moore each recorded two hits.
Wright City is slated to host Montgomery County Thursday. First pitch is slated for 4:30 p.m. They will square off against county rival Warrenton Friday. First pitch is slated for 4:15 p.m. in Warrenton.
