Wright City earned a home win over Louisiana Tuesday, their first conference win of the season.
The Lady Wildcats beat Louisiana 8-4 in an Eastern Missouri Conference clash. Louisiana is also in Wright City’s district this season.
“We played really well,” Wright City softball coach Fred Ross said. “I think we only had two strikeouts tonight. So you put the ball in play, good things happen. We really hit the opposite field when they pitched away…But up and down the line up, we did things we need to do.”
Wright City and Louisiana traded leads early in the game until Wright City claimed the lead for good in the third inning. Emma Staats’ RBI double in the third inning scored Lydia Clubb to tie the game 3-3. The Lady Wildcats took the lead later in the inning on Sadie Sehnert’s RBI groundout.
Wright City extended their lead in the fifth inning after Clubb led off the inning with a double and scored on Staats’ subsequent single.
“After that second time through the lineup,we started hitting her pretty good, the first pitcher,” Ross said. “And they brought the other pitcher in and she had some speed but not much movement. We can hit fast pitching and we hit fast pitching and got those extra runs.”
Wright City added three insurance runs in the sixth inning, all with two outs. Staats hit a double to score Paige Rees and Clubb. Staats scored later in the inning on Sehnert’s RBI single.
“I was kind of just thinking that I needed those runners to score so Sophie had more to work with… I wasn't really thinking anything other than that. I was just seeing ball, hit ball,” Staats said.
Sophia Wegrzyn earned the win on the mound for Wright City. She pitched all seven innings. She allowed two earned runs and struck out three batters in the win.
Clubb and Staats each had three hits for the Lady Wildcats. Staats led Wright City with four RBIs. Clubb scored four runs. Sehnert and Wegrzyn each reached base twice.
Wright City was slated to compete at the Ft. Zumwalt East Tournament starting Sept. 14.
