The Warrenton girls basketball team is still searching for win No. 2 after dropping a pair of games against some strong nonconference competition, falling at home to Ft. Zumwalt North on Thursday and losing at Sullivan Monday. The Panthers and Eagles have a combined 7-1 record in the early going. And it doesn’t get any easier for the Warriors (1-3), who head to Lincoln County for a showdown this Monday with 4-1 Troy.
Ft. ZUMWALT NORTH 39, WARRENTON 22
The Warriors’ home-opener was spoiled by cold. Cold shooting that is, as the hosts connected on just 8-of-33 attempts from the floor with no one making more than two field goals and no one scoring more than six points.
Malea Payne scored five points and had eight rebounds and Garneisha Love also had five points. Kassidy Haller scored four points, Audrey Payne and Dana Pruitt three each and Brooke Smith two.
The first lead was good enough for the Panthers, who were up 10-5 after the opening period, 21-12 at intermission and 30-19 after the third.
FZN’s Jaden Stahl, a 6-foot-senior, was the unofficial player of the game, landing a double-double and game-highs in both points and rebounds with 14 and 11, respectively.
SULLIVAN 49, WARRENTON 25
Once again the Warriors had trouble getting going on offense with Sullivan cruising to a 16-5 advantage after the opening quarter.
The Warriors were OK on 2-point shots (47.4 percent) but made just one of 12 attempts form behind the arc.
Post Miranda Nelson had a team-high eight points and four rebounds. Love had six points, Audrey Payne five and Smith, Pruitt and Haller had two each.
Sullivan didn’t shoot well at 36.4 percent but had an advantage on the boards, outrebounding Warrenton 28-14.
Mallory Shetley was an exception though as she was a perfect 3-for-3 from 3 had a game-high 24 points for the Eagles. Rylee Denbow also hit double figures with 15 points.
