Watching two other teams, including one it defeated, advance to the quarterfinals at the Blue Springs Wood Bat Tournament, the Washington Post 218 Seniors (22-4) took out their frustration against Quincy, Ill., Post 37 in a consolation game Saturday, 8-0.

“We really bounced back against a very good Quincy team that had been in the final four of this tournament in the last couple of years.” Washington Manager Mike Gardner said.

Two pitchers, Nate Hillermann and Matt McGilvray, combined for the no-hitter against the Illinois squad.

“Nate pitched the first inning and Matt then came in and pitched the rest of the game to combine for a no-hitter,” Gardner said. “It was a really good team victory and a great way to end the tournament.”

Gardner noted there were a number of scouts at the contest.

We had a few college coaches and a couple of pro scouts in the stands to take a look at our kids and they really shined,” Gardner said.

Washington was relegated to the consolation games following Friday’s split. Post 218 beat St. Joseph Post 11, but lost to Bellevue, Neb., Post 339 East.

The Nebraska team and the Lee’s Summit Post 189 Outlaws, a team Washington beat 11-4 Thursday, advanced to the quarterfinals.

In Saturday’s game, Washington took the lead with a run in the first and exploded for seven more in the fourth to end it on the mercy rule after five frames.

Hillermann pitched the opening inning, walking one and striking out one.

McGilvray took over for the next four innings and struck out seven while walking one and hitting one batter. He earned the win.

Offensively, Kyle Tuepker led the way with two hits, a home run and a double.

“Kyle led off the game with a home run and we really played one of our better games all year,” Gardner said.

Hillermann doubled.

Gus Kleekamp had two singles while Adam Gauzy added one single.

Mitch Barrow, Justin Baylard and Jace Backs walked.

Tuepker scored twice. Spencer Juergens, Barrow, Baylard, Kleekamp, Ryan Lohrer and Adam Gauzy each scored once.

Tuepker and Hillermann drove in two runs apiece. Kleekamp and Gauzy each had one RBI.

Kleekamp and Lohrer added stolen bases.

Quincy had three runners. Ben Schroeder walked and was hit by a pitch. Nick Wellimann walked.

Evan Ehrardt took the loss, going three innings while allowing one run on two hits. He struck out two.

Derrick Green pitched the final inning, allowing seven runs (four earned) on four hits and three walks.
