Jake Kinney was calm, cool and collected when the Warrenton football team needed him most.
Kinney knocked the ball 23 yards through the uprights on the game’s final play as visiting Warrenton earned the 15-13 win at Washington on Thursday.
“Going out, there was a lot of stress,” Kinney said. “I had faith in my guys, though. It was a good snap, a good hold. There’s a flow with kicking, it’s all got to fall in line for a kick to work, I can’t take all the credit. Seeing the ball go through the uprights is surreal. You dream of that moment as a kicker.”
Warrenton (2-0) scored all nine points in the second half to earn the win.
Prior to the field goal Henry Schneider found the end zone with 6:37 left to pull Warrenton to within 14-13.
The ensuing 2-point conversion called for by Coach Jason Koper fell short as Keegan Lehmkuhl was tackled inches from the goal line.
“Not one of my finer moments as a coach, but I thought if we could go get the lead,” said Koper of the decision’s gravity. “I figured momentum would be key to winning the game and (in the end) it was.”
In the first half, Carter Hill struck first for Washington (0-2).
His 46-yard scoring run with 9 minutes, 9 seconds left in the first quarter gave Washington the 7-0 lead after the PAT.
Warrenton tied the score with 3:51 left in the first quarter.
That’s when sophomore Mason Sanders found Keegan Lehmkuhl on an 11-yard score. The PAT by Kinney tied the game.
Washington took the lead into halftime as Sanders scored again. He found the end zone on a 6-yard run with 5:51 left in the half. After the extra point, Washington took the 14-7 lead into the half.
The win Thursday extended the Warriors’ winning streak over Washington to four, including a 26-7 win at home in the game played in Week 2 last season.
Warrenton will return home next week to host St. Dominic (1-0) at 7 p.m. on Friday.
