KickStart winner plans to build animal shelter in Warren County

First State Community Bank (FSCB) announced the winners of its third annual KickStart program during a ceremony at the Warrenton branch on Nov. 17.Beginning in 2014, FSCB began this initiative to bring awareness and financial assistance to local nonprofit organizations. This year’s winner was Concerned Citizens for Animal Control (CCAC), which received a $2,500 donation, along with 20 hours of community service from employees of FSCB.“It’s extremely exciting,” said CCAC President Pat Schulze. “We are so happy that everyone decided to come out and support us to try and build an animal shelter for Warren County.”And that is exactly the goal of CCAC, which has been in operation as a nonprofit since 2001.“We really need a shelter here, as we do not have one,” said Schulze. “We’ve plugged along with fundraisers. We were able to purchase 3 acres in 2008, and then things stagnated with the recession. Now we’ve got a bunch of new interested people, and we’re picking back up and going to try and finish our mission.”Schulze says the $2,500 was immediately deposited into CCAC’s account at the bank to go toward the shelter challenge goal to raise $100,000 for next year.Organizations were nominated by the community, narrowed down to four and then voted upon by community members.“I think it works better when the community does the voting,” said Penny McClain, FSCB branch loan specialist. “We’ve done that the past two years. The first year the bank chose, but we’ve put it in the hands of the community since then.”The top four vote recipients were invited to the announcement ceremony, where each of the runners-up was presented with a $200 check.“The primary objective is to get the community aware of all the organizations that are out there,” said McClain, who said the numbers of applicants are up from 11 in 2015 to 17 this year.CCAC received 449 votes. The second-place recipient was the Animal Welfare Association of Warren County with 414 votes.Jordan’s Place Teen Center received 371 votes to place third.Finishing in fourth place was the Strong Tower Ranch with 228 votes.“We try to keep the money in the community and support the community businesses, because it’s where we live and work,” said McClain. “It’s important for FSCB to give back, and it’s something we believe in and strive to do.”
