A 23-year-old Warrenton man on trial for stealing a woman's purse outside of the Warrenton Kroger was recently found guilty.
A jury, consisting of six women and six men, found James W. Lewis guilty after deliberating for about two hours in a one-day trial held May 22.
Circuit Judge Wes Dalton presided over the trial. He will sentence Lewis on July 8.
Police responded to Kroger on April 6, 2013, after the victim reported she had been robbed of her purse after leaving the grocery store. A man riding his bike near the store heard the victim yell, and began chasing the robber, according to Prosecutor Jennifer Bartlett. The man caught up with the robber, identified as Lewis, and subdued him until police arrived on the scene.
“I am very pleased with the jury's verdict in this matter,” Bartlett said. “The jury took their job seriously, as they should, weighed the evidence and found the defendant guilty.”Jury finds Warrenton man guilty of robbery, resisting arrest
