June First Friday adds live music, car theme to festival

Live music, bike races, more children’s activities and a car theme will be the new additions for the next First Friday festival in Wright City on June 4.

The festival is from 5-9 p.m. on North First Street. Organizers have been recruiting vendors to attend the June event since the success of the May First Friday event, which drew around 80 vendors and 2,000 visitors.

Jenn Olivio, a co-organizer for the June festival, said she is particularly excited for the bike races that are part of the June festival theme, and for the live music that could be pat of every festival going forward.

Olivio said the bike races are among several new activities that will add more for young kids and families to do. Participants are suggested to bring their own bikes.

“There will be different age classes, and we’re hoping for kids on tricycles all the way up to teens,” Olivio commented. She joked that any adults who want to give it a try can also join in. “It’s not a long course, but anyone can give it a try.”

There will also be a small obstacle course for young children on tricycles or small bikes to test their driving skills, Olivio added.

The two live bands will be placed at opposite ends of the festival area, with one at St. Louisiana Q and one at Town and County Garage (which Olivio co-owns). Olivio said organizers had also heard feedback that festival visitors wanted more seating to enjoy their food and entertainment, so tables and seating are being added.

Olivio said the additions and improvements over the first festival in May are all about creating an even better experience for local residents and visitors.

“First Fridays is about getting families together in a way they can spend time together and enjoy all the parts of the community they live in. We’re a small town, but we’re trying to make sure the people who live here want to spend their time here,” Olivio commented.

Other special features for the June festival:

• Car industry vendors to fit the theme of “Rolling Into Summer.”

• Wall chalk graffiti and games for kids, in addition to the return of bounce houses.

• Stages where special performances and demonstrations can be done when live music isn’t happening.

• A variety of food and craft vendors, along with the return of an adoptable pet showcase.

“We’re hoping all the people who enjoyed the festival in May come out again this month,” Olivio said.
