Wright City’s Chase Jones helped lead the Wildcat varsity baseball team to a 17-7 record this spring and a second straight trip to the district championship game.
Jones hit .444 for Wright City before moving to shortstop for the Warrenton Post 122 Senior team this summer.
He plays shortstop for Post 122 during the week and catches for the St. Louis Redbirds select team on the weekends.
In August, he will enroll at St. Louis Community College-Meramec, where he will continue his baseball career for the Archers,
In the meantime, Jones sat down with The Record after being named June’s Athlete of the Month:
What is your favorite part of summer baseball? “Not practicing every single day. It’s a lot more relaxed and the coaches are more laid-back.”
What are you most excited about college? “Having a little more freedom and being able to go out and practice whenever I need to. I’m excited to play with some guys who have been around for a while and make myself better.”
What do you like most about playing catcher? “I like controlling the game. It keeps me in the game mentally. When you’re in the field you can become lackadaisical at times.”
Was it a tough adjustment going from catcher to shortstop this summer? “Sometimes it has been tough because I have to keep myself focused.”
What will you miss most about high school? “The people on the team. These guys are a lot of fun to be around. You go to school with them all day and then you have practices or games, and they’re just a bunch of characters.”
Biggest role model: “(Houston Astros second baseman) Jose Altuve, because he’s such a small guy but he gets the job done. He shows you that your size doesn’t matter, you just have to get the job done.”
What is one thing people might not know about you? “Nothing really. I’m a pretty basic guy, honestly.”
Favorite movie: “The Rookie.”
Dream job: “It might sound like a little kid’s story, but professional baseball.”
One celebrity you would like to meet: “(Los Angeles Angels outfielder) Mike Trout. He seems like a pretty cool guy off the field.”
Favorite meal: “Peanut butter and jelly.”
One place you would like to visit: “I’d like to go to Hawaii. It seems pretty cool there.”
Biggest fear: “I don’t like snakes. They can go away.”
Dream car: “2016 Stingray Corvette. It’s a pretty cool-looking car.”
