The city of Jonesburg is hosting a free movie night on the last Friday of each month at Lions Park, giving all residents from both Montgomery and Warren counties something to enjoy during the rest of the spring and all of the summer.
The city held its first movie night on April 24, showing the 1995 motion picture, “Toy Story.” A small car show preceded the movie.
The movie night schedule has been set for the next four months. On May 29, a flea market will be held, followed by the 1988 movie, “The Great Outdoors.” The next month, a cornhole tournament will be held, followed by the 1993 movie, “The Sandlot.” On July 31, a business fair will take place at Lions Park, followed by the 1993 movie, “Dennis The Menace.” A car show will be held and the 1973 movie, “American Graffiti,” will be shown on Aug. 28 at the park.
Oscar Hunter, who works for Hunter Saak Investments, is the coordinator of Jonesburg Movie Nights, which is sponsored by Patriot Wine & Liquor and the Jonesburg Lions Club. He first discussed the movie night event at the Jonesburg Board of Aldermen meeting on March 2.
“It’s just a good community deal,” Hunter said. “I’m not trying to take credit, but I was basically the one who got Warren County and Montgomery County talking again. I’m right in the middle. I’m trying to get the two counties together, so it’s not one county against the other. Jonesburg will be just neutral and either county is more than welcome here. It’s the same way with the businesses. When we do the business day, they’re businesses from both counties and any city is more than welcome to come up and advertise their products.”
Hunter credits Jonesburg City Administrator Cory Eye for coming up with the idea of bringing movie night back to Jonesburg.
“We did a couple of them years ago in Jonesburg,” Hunter said. “It was a success, then everybody let it drop.”
Hunter said the first movie night drew a good turnout.
“The park was full,” Hunter said. “We had 20-30 kids who watched the movie.”
Food, such as hot dogs, hamburgers and fish sandwiches, will be served at the Jonesburg Movie Nights.
