Jonesburg holds groundbreaking ceremony on new senior housing project

The City of Jonesburg held a groundbreaking ceremony on March 18 at the Booneslick Gardens Senior Housing complex to announce a new senior housing project that will include 12 handicapped accessible units.

Jonesburg city officials, members of Jonesburg State Bank and the Boonslick Regional Planning Commission, Montgomery County 1st District Commissioner Dave Teeter and Warren County Presiding Commissioner Joe Gildehaus were in attendance at the 10-minute ceremony.

The senior housing project, which will be located on West Foreman Street, will include washers and dryers and provide easy access to the city. BRPC Community Planner Dawn Mowery said the senior housing project will help bring additional security and housing that are needed in the Jonesburg area.

“I had the pleasure of working with the city in the grant writing process to get this project from a dream to a reality, so I’m super excited,” Mowery said. “It’s going to be super beneficial to this community and our surrounding communities.”

The project is an initiative that is sponsored by Jonesburg State Bank and the Federal Home Loan Bank of Des Moines. Jonesburg Mayor Bob Sellenriek said he’s excited about the new project that is coming to his town.

“It’s kind of a dream come true,” he said. “Hopefully, in a year or two, we can rehab all of those units as well. The thing about it is it provides a nice place for people in their elderly years and some of them will be living in less than good conditions, so I want to thank everybody for their work on it.”

Kyle Smith, Executive Vice President of Jonesburg State Bank, said the funding came from the FHLB’s Home Affordability Program. According to the bank’s website, the program awarded more than $1 billion in grants within the last 30-plus years to help families and individuals access affordable housing.

“When Bob first came to the bank to talk about the possibility of utilizing this program for the funding and financing, I was excited,” Smith said. “I haven’t gotten to participate in a program like this. I know (Jonesburg State Bank President) Dan (Robb) has in the past with the bank with renovations and stuff. I’m super excited. We’re happy to help in any way shape or form we could.”

BRPC Executive Director Teresa Lee credits Mowery for her outstanding work in bringing a new senior housing project to Jonesburg.

“I want to commend Dawn,” Lee said. “She led the charge for us at BRPC. We’re so happy that we got this on the first-year application and excited to bring $1.8 million into the community and into the region.”

Teeter said the project will be a great addition to Jonesburg, which has over 700 residents and is known for its Lighted Christmas Parade in December and its homecoming in June.

“I got to say that Jonesburg probably has the most growth in terms of housing,” Teeter said. “Now with some additional housing, that’s a testament to Bob, the citizens, the work and the things that have tried to push to see things happen in Jonesburg.”
