Jonesburg Fair and Homecoming is back this weekend

Posted

Eight years ago, Stacy Calbreath became the coordinator of the baby show at the Jonesburg Lions Fair and Homecoming.

Since then, the baby show has been an event the Jonesburg resident always looked forward to going to every year.

“It’s fun to see all of those babies and their families and how cute they are,” Calbreath said.

The Baby Show will be one of the main attractions at the 80th annual Jonesburg fair, which is scheduled for June 18-20 at Lions Park in Jonesburg. Other attractions include musical performances from Ron Austin, Mickey Scott and Shoot For The Stars, a pedal tractor pull, an egg toss, a chain saw contest, a car show and a parade that will honor Missouri’s 200th anniversary of statehood.

Jerry Schwartz will return for his 42nd year as chairman of the Jonesburg Fair, which started in 1941.

“It’s been good to watch the kids,” Schwartz said. “That’s what I do it for. Everybody in the community liked to look forward to it. But I enjoy seeing the kids there. Now, I’ve got kids who’ve got kids who’ve got kids who have been going to this thing.”

Calbreath said she’s happy the event is back this summer after being cancelled last year due to the coronavirus pandemic.

“We just had the Optimist barbecue uptown last weekend for the Khoury League baseball tournament,” Calbreath said. “Every team in the Khoury League played and it was wonderful to be at the park just to see everybody out and about supporting our local teams and our Optimist clubs. So I know that everybody is looking forward to having a great time at the Homecoming and supporting the Jonesburg Lions Club.”

The fair officially starts at 11 a.m. on June 18, with the fish and food stand opening for patrons. The pedal tractor pull, the egg toss and chain saw contest are scheduled for later that evening.

The baby show kicks off the second day of the fair on June 19, with registration starting at 10 a.m. The contest begins at 11 a.m. There are five divisions each in the boys and girls groups, and the winner of each division advances to the Grand Champion contest.

Calbreath said the baby show always has a strong turnout.

“You don’t have to live in the county (to enter),” Calbreath said. “We have people as far as from St. Charles out for it. It’s not too early in the morning and it’s not too late in the day, so it’s really not too terribly hot for anybody.”

Calbreath, who lived in Jonesburg for 16 years, was selected as the baby show’s coordinator in 2013, when she joined the Lioness Club.

“The Lioness always did (the baby show) for the Jonesburg Lions Club, so when I became a member of the Lioness, I just volunteered that I would do it,” Calbreath said. “They’ve done the baby show ever since Homecoming was still around. When I joined, I decided to take care of it. They did it long enough at that point to where, ‘Oh, it’s my turn. I’m the newbie here.’ So I’ll run the show for you guys.”

Also on June 18, the car show starts at noon and the parade begins at 4 p.m.

On the final day on June 19, there will be activities for children from 1-3 p.m.

There will be a carnival at the fair on all three days, and it is provided by Tinsley Amusements of High Hill.

Advance coupons are available at select Jonesburg businesses. The cost of 25 advance coupons is $20. Anyone who wants to purchase a coupon on the fairgrounds, the cost is $20 for 22 coupons or $1.25 each.
