Jerrett Villinger named Missouri Wrestling Coaches Association District Wrestler of the Year

After winning 50 matches and making his way to the state championship bout in Columbia this season, Warrenton junior Jerrett Villinger was named the Missouri Wrestling Coaches Association Class 3, District 2 Wrestler of the Year.

Villinger won the district tournament in February with a 4-0 record.

“It was something I would not have pictured myself being two years ago,” Villinger said.

Next season the 160-pounder will look to become the first Warrenton wrestler to compete in four state tournaments.

He also will be one of the favorites to win his division, which would make him Warrenton’s first individual champion since J.J. Filipek in 2013.

“Next year I’d like to put a little more emphasis on my weaknesses instead of all the positive points all the time,” he said. “I think those are often overlooked in the wrestling room.”

He added, “I think my biggest improvement this season was relaxing before my matches. Wrestling is a big mental sport, and sometimes my biggest opponent was myself.”
