On a team filled with underclassmen, Amanda Lafaver is the only senior on this year’s Warrenton girls basketball team.
Lafaver averaged 3.4 points and 2.4 rebounds for the Warriors before injuring her elbow in the Warrenton Winter Classic championship Jan. 15 against Duchesne.
She tore a ligament in her shooting elbow and is expected to miss 2-4 weeks, but hopes to return before the postseason.
“I’ve only been out for a little bit, and I’m already ready to be back,” she said recently.
Lafaver helped the Warriors post a 9-1 record before her injury.
Also a member of the state championship-winning softball team, Lafaver was a second-team All-Gateway Athletic Conference North selection on the diamond.
While she rehabs her elbow and prepares to return to the court in February, Lafaver sat down with The Record and answered a few questions after being named January’s Athlete of the Month:
What’s it like being the only senior on this team? “It’s different. It feels odd because I had other friends my age that played, but they’re focusing on other sports and activities now, so it’s weird.”
What is your favorite part about playing high school basketball?
“Being able to create great friendships with the girls.”
Would you rather go a month without cable or a month without internet?
“Cable, because you can watch almost any show on the internet.”
If you could have one superpower, what would it be?
“Teleporting, because I hate driving. I would rather just get somewhere instead of driving 45 minutes.”
Favorite class:
“My teaching class because I’m learning to become a teacher. I get to observe a fourth-grade class, which is fun.”
Favorite meal:
“Anything gluten free.”
What are your plans after high school?
“I’m doing two years at St. Charles Community College through the A-plus program, and then I’ll look at a four-year school after that.”
Favorite movie:
“Pride and Prejudice. My mom and I watch it all the time.”
One celebrity you would like to meet:
“Tom Hanks is definitely my favorite. I love him in all of his movies.”
Dream job:
“Teacher.”
Late nights or early mornings:
“When I was younger, I would have said late nights. But now I would have to say early mornings.”
One place you would like to visit:
“I think it would be cool to go to New York and see the big city because I’ve lived in Warrenton my entire life.”
Walk-off home run in softball or buzzer-beater in basketball?
“Walk-off home run because it’s more technique and you can show people your strength.”
