This fall, the Warrenton boys’ soccer team will have a new leader.
The good news for the program, which finished the 2025-26 season with a 14-9 record, is that Jake Brown has been hired to lead the Warriors.
Brown, who graduated from Warrenton in 2005, will bring plenty of continuity from former coach John Schulte.
“I was a varsity player for four years,” Brown said. “I came back after college and was an assistant for the program for 16 years. I’m excited to see what the future holds with a lot of upcoming talent.”
Brown will take over a program whose varsity squad will lose seven seniors from a team that earned the program’s best record over the past 16 seasons.
“The senior class – that’s a legacy,” said Schulte at the end of last season. “Hopefully they’ll be talking about it for years with the amount of goals they scored, how well they played, the intensity and focus they had and just the hard work.”
One of the seniors, Isaac Wagner, broke school records for single-season goals (45), assists (16) and points (106).
“With (Wagner) scoring all those goals and having 106 points, that’s going to be hard to replace,” Schulte said.
Underclassmen who played roles in the team’s success for the Warriors last season include current junior forward Tyler Scruggs (14 goals, 12 assists this past season), sophomore midfielder Ian Young (7, 1), junior defender Elijah Sheperd (5, 0) and junior midfielder Gavin Thompson (5, 10).
Additionally, current junior Rylee McGee (14-9 record, five shutouts, 2.72 goals against average) had a solid season as the Warriors’ goalkeeper.
Brown said he knows there’s going to be plenty of work to do to reach the expectations he has for the team.
“I am going to work hard to build a positive environment where we can work hard, learn and build,” Brown said. “We have some big shoes to fill with a stellar senior class last year.”
As a player at Warrenton, Brown scored 15 goals throughout his four seasons with the Warriors before heading off to college.
He currently serves as a Physical Education teacher at Rebecca Boone Elementary and has been the head coach of the school’s boys’ volleyball program, which began two seasons ago. The volleyball program went from five wins in its first season to an 11-11-1 finish this spring.
Warrenton director of athletics Andrew Arnette said that maintaining the high level of expectation within the program set by Schulte is something her sees Brown having no problem accomplishing.
“Jake has been a cornerstone of Warrenton soccer for years, and he’s earned this opportunity,” Arnette said. “He brings a unique balance of tactical consistency and a fun-loving energy that the players really respond to. As we rebuild after a talented senior class, having a head coach who already knows our culture but isn't afraid to introduce fresh ideas and new staff is a huge win for us. I’m confident Jake will lead this program in the right direction both on and off the field.”
