For some reason, the media back east, especially in the D.C. swampland, has been quiet about a scandal in the U.S. House. In the center of the scandal are Democrats. The entire matter was outlined by Kimberly Strassel, who writes the Potomac Watch column in The Wall Street Journal.A man named Imran Awan has been arrested in an FBI investigation. He was a congressional staffer who worked for top Democrats in the House. Awan has been charged with bank fraud and other crimes, and the investigation also involves outright stealing from the government.Strassel said Awan and his family were paid huge sums of money and had access to sensitive congressional data. The family had close ties to Pakistan.Strassel wrote that the story, “at the very least,” is a tale of massive government incompetence that “seemingly allowed a family of accused swindlers to bilk federal taxpayers out of millions and even put national secrets at risk.”Among the people Awan worked for was Debbie Wasserman Schultz, the future head of the National Democratic Committee. Awan added his wife, two brothers, a brother’s wife and a friend to the government payroll. One brother, age 20, was paid $160,000. One report has it that the family collected $5 million since 2003, and at one time or another family names appeared on about 80 House Democrats’ payrolls. Most were ghost employees who never worked. The fraud goes on and on, and yet this scandal isn’t given hardly any attention in the liberal press. One can only imagine the coverage it would have had if Republicans were involved. Since the Democrats aren’t going to do it, Republicans on The Hill should speak up about this. It’s a major scandal!
