There’s an unanswered question about a state candidate’s eligibility to run for auditor. It wasn’t answered when the auditor candidates appeared before members of the Missouri Press Association at the group’s annual meeting in St. Louis County last Friday.
The question is whether Republican candidate Saundra McDowell has lived in Missouri for the past 10 years. The state Constitution says an auditor must have been a resident for 10 years at the time of the election.
The incumbent state auditor, Democrat Nicole Galloway, a CPA, who is seeking re-election, said court records show McDowell had a Kansas address in 2013.
McDowell said no one has legally challenged her eligibility. Galloway said her campaign staff is still looking into McDowell’s residency record.
It is a bit strange that there hasn’t been a legal challenge to the residency question. Is there any merit to the charge that McDowell is ineligible to be a candidate over the residency question?
If McDowell, a lawyer, should be elected, will there then be a legal challenge to her eligibility to serve in the auditor’s office?
Her residency question should be cleared up before the November election. Voters need to know the truth.
The way things are now, there is a dark political cloud hanging over McDowell’s eligibility to be a candidate.
