Within the next few years, the Missouri Department of Transportation will replace two historic bridges located on Missouri Highway 79 in Pike County – Buffalo Creek and Noix Creek, both located just south of Louisiana in Pike County.“These bridges are considered historic as they are eligible for listing in the National Register of Historic Places,” explained Karen Daniels, senior historic preservation specialist with MoDOT.Since they are historic, federal law requires any state proposing demolition of a historic bridge to first make it available for donation to a state, locality or responsible private entity. The cost to remove the bridges or parts of each bridge is borne by the organization that gets the bridge. For information about reusing a bridge or making a reuse proposal are encouraged to view MoDOT’s free bridges website (http://www.modot.org/freebridges/).Details about each bridge are available online at www.modot.org/northeast/major_projects/pike.htm.For questions or additional information, please contact Daniels at 573-526-7346 or karen.daniels@modot.mo.gov.MoDOT
