Innsbrook officials hold discussion on ‘titling tax’

Record Managing EditorInnsbrook officials are looking into a future ballot measure that will allow the village to continue receiving a “titling tax” on some purchases made out of state.Officials were recently advised by the Missouri Municipal League that municipalities are receiving funds from a use tax, but that voters must decide if they want the governments to continue getting that money. In 2013, Missouri lawmakers approved imposing a state and local sales taxes on the sale of motor vehicles, trailers, boats and outboard motors at the time the buyer went to get a title on the new purchase. According to the law, the residence of the purchase is used to determine the local tax rate.Officials said all taxing jurisdictions that have not previously approved a local use tax must proceed with a ballot measure allowing voters to decide whether or not to discontinue collecting sales tax on the out-of-state purchases. At the last board of trustees meeting May 12, Chairman Jeff Thomsen requested an ordinance authorizing the ballot measure be acted on in September. If approved, Innsbrook voters will decide the issue in April 2016.Administrator/City Clerk Chris McCormick said it will be to the village’s advantage for voters to oppose the ballot measure so that it can continue receiving the sales tax in the future. She was unsure how much extra revenue the village receives from the “titling tax.”“We want to pass the ordinance and have plenty of time to inform the public on what we are doing,” McCormick said. “If we do not submit it to voters, we will no longer receive the titling tax we are receiving.”In other news• The village hall has new hours beginning this week. The office will be open Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Previously, the hall was open Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.• After learning a recycling trailer provided by Boonslick Regional Planning Commission was being moved to another city, officials agreed to look into purchasing a used trailer for future use.• A public hearing on the proposed 2015-2016 budget will be held at the next trustee meeting Tuesday, June 9, at 7:30 p.m.Innsbrook
