Incumbents, two new candidates file for county elected offices

A parade of incumbents wasted no time in seeking another term for offices that make up the heads of Warren County government.

Candidate filing for nine county elected offices opened on Tuesday, Feb. 22. Those who file will have their names appear on primary election ballots in August.

These county-level elections are separate from local city, school board and emergency district elections, which are set for April 5.

Seven incumbent county officials registered for re-election on the first day, with no challengers emerging to compete with them out of the gate. According to the Warren County Clerk’s Office, these are the incumbents who registered on day one:

• Presiding Commissioner Joe Gildehaus, the head of the county government’s chief legislative and administrative board.
• Prosecuting Attorney Kelly King, who leads criminal prosecutions within the county.
• Collector of Revenue Julie Schaumberg, the head of the county’s tax collection office.
• Treasurer Jeff Hoelscher, who monitors the county’s finances.
• Associate Judge Richard Scheibe, who oversees Warren County’s Division 2 court cases.
• Associate Judge Mike Wright, who oversees Warren County’s Division 3 court cases.
• Circuit Court Clerk Tim Beard, the head of the office that manages the court’s records and scheduling.

Two elected officials were absent from first-day candidate filing. Warren County Clerk Denise Stotler, who is also the county’s chief election official, did not put her name on the ballot on Tuesday.

The other absent incumbent, Recorder of Deeds Deborah Engemann, won’t be appearing on ballots this fall. Engemann is not running for office this year, and is retiring after more than 20 years of serving the county.

Instead, at least two new candidates are seeking to take over management of the recorder’s office that retains and safeguards all property records and marriage licenses in Warren County. Candidates Cynthia Short and Christy Bonstell both registered on Tuesday, according to the county clerk’s office.

Candidate filing remains open at the clerk’s office until 5 p.m. March 29. The office is located in the County Administration Building at 101 Mockingbird Lane, Warrenton.

For questions, call 636-456-3331. Each candidate must bring identification and must pay a $100 filing fee. They are also required to complete a form indicating they owe no taxes and are able to meet bonding requirements if elected.

State-level election filing also opened Tuesday in the Missouri Secretary of State’s Office. Relevant elections to this area include State House Representatives for District 42 and District 63, State Senator for District 10, U.S. House Representative for District 3, U.S. Senator, and Missouri State Auditor.
