Sen. John McCain was right when he said Sunday that President Donald Trump’s immigration order last weekend has resulted in confusion. The Trump ban also has caused some anger, such as stopping even green card holders. The order applies to seven predominantly Muslim countries — Iraq, Syria, Iran, Sudan, Somalia, Libya and Yemen. The order also halts entry to the U.S. by Syrian refugees until the president determines that changes to the refugee assistance program ensure that admitting them won’t compromise national security.Reactions are mixed to the president’s order. Those who voted for Trump and agreed with his campaign promises to halt, in some cases, immigration and to do a better job of checking immigrants, are glad to see the action as a needed security issue. Others, like Sen. McCain, believe confusion about the order must be cleared up, and some Americans believe it goes against this country’s fundamental value of welcoming immigrants, which they believe has made the U.S. strong.Circumstances certainly are different today than when this country first welcomed immigrants. There is a security issue to a degree never before faced by the U.S.Is this a temporary situation to be eased in the future? Is it just a symbolic move by Trump to please his supporters? What kind of follow-through will result? We will have to wait to see how it plays out!
