Ideas welcome: Wright City hosting public meeting for new park

Wright City parks officials are asking for public input for what should be done with 62 acres of parkland purchased by the city earlier this month.Residents of Wright City are invited to express their wishes for the new park during a park board meeting at 6 p.m. on Nov. 13 in the Heiliger Building at Diekroeger Park. City officials said there will be at least two such public meetings before beginning any design or engineering.“Whenever you’re going to develop something new like that, for as big a deal as this is for Wright City to have a new park, you always want to get consensus, people’s thoughts on what they want to see,” said city Parks Director Curt Kehoe. The park is on Westwoods Road near the intersection with Wildcat Drive. It is within walking distance of several neighborhoods, schools and the new Wright City library.Kehoe said there already has been some feedback about what could be done with the park, ranging from athletic fields, to a disc golf course, to one ambitious suggestion creating a lake with a beach. While some ideas might be more feasible than others, Kehoe said the land offers new opportunities and possibilities for city park programs. Wright City’s largest public park currently is Ruge Park, which Kehoe said is about 20 acres. He said there is a strong need for more fields to play baseball, and for a soccer program recently started by the city.Wright City closed on the purchase of the 62 acres for the park from a private owner in early October. The city put a contract on the land in January. The park was purchased for $19,000 per acre, totaling almost $1.2 million. Funding was provided by the sale of the city-owned water and sewer utilities, which were purchased for $10.5 million in July by Public Water Supply District No. 2.

This map shows the location of potential park land Wright City has an agreement to purchase if the city sells its sewer and water systems.
