Record Managing EditorWright City officials last week denied a request to allow 15 dogs and cats to remain in a single-family residence.A property cannot have more than three dogs or cats or any combination of the pets over the age of 4 months, according to city ordinance. The property in question had nine dogs and six cats. All four aldermen at last Thursday’s meeting voted to deny the request and to enforce the ordinance.“I don’t see any reason why not to follow our ordinance,” Alderman Jim Schuchmann said. The city plans to contact the Humane Society or another similar type of animal welfare group to assist in having the dogs and cats removed and cared for. No specific time line was given at the meeting.A complaint was recently filed by the city after the dogs and cats were found in a residence occupied by five people. The pets had not been registered with the city, according to city officials. The pets’ owners attended the Sept. 24 meeting and claimed that only two of the dogs go outside the residence on a regular basis. The rest of the pets primarily stay inside the residence. The pets, the owners said, have been with them for years.Aldermen reviewed the issue at the Sept. 24 meeting and discussed it again at their monthly workshop on Oct. 5.Pet owners are required to have a pet tag issued by the city. A tag is only issued if the owners can show proof that the pets are up to date on their vaccinations. The pet tags cost $2 if the animals are spayed and neutered or $4 if not.In other news• The board awarded an asphalt bid to Magruder Paving, LLC, for $77,640.
