Record Staff WriterFrom a team perspective, Friday’s Warrenton Cross Country Invitational was a positive foreshadowing for Coach Jeremy Collins. He watched his cast of six boys compete closely amongst a field of runners that will later determine their postseason fate, finishing just behind St. Charles in fifth place after a tiebreaker.“I thought they did pretty well,” said Collins. “We saw a lot of teams that are going to be in our district. Looking at how we competed as a team, we are up there as far as district is concerned.”The Warriors had three medalists by placing in the top 25, led by senior James Goetz. It was his first time leading the team this season, as he cruised in with a time of 18 minutes, 14 seconds. He placed 16th overall.“He’s been working really hard, and I assume that’s in part because it’s his senior year,” said Collins. “He hasn’t been going out as fast as he was last year, focusing more on running an even pace.”Freshman Nathan Nordwald, who had led the Warriors in all other races, claimed 17th with a time of 18:16.“For him to come in as a freshman and be one of our top runners is really good,” said Collins. “He has a great attitude, works hard and races really well. As a freshman it’s really exciting to see.”Sophomore Dylan Chandler ran an 18:24 to come in 19th, while sophomore Randy McRoberts finished 29th with an 18:48.“It really isn’t surprising that we had someone else lead, because our first three or four have been really close to one another,” said Collins. “It’s always kind of fun seeing who can be our No. 1 runner because they’re all so close together.”The Warriors also had two other runners, with sophomore Matthew Hackman placing 38th with a 19:11 and Ben Hoelscher taking 58th with a 20:23.“For just knowing that we can run with them and have a chance is getting them more excited,” said Collins, of the team’s confidence building as the postseason approaches. The Warrenton girls team placed sixth, led by junior Andrea Poole in 11th with a time of 21:57.“Andrea has a good attitude and is working hard,” said Collins. “Her work ethic and drive to do well is showing in the races. She has surprised me by how her times have come down with how hard she’s been working.”Senior Mary Broker also medaled for the Warriors, finishing 15th in 22:39. She has seen limited course time, balancing responsibilities between running and participating in theater.“Mary has a lot going on, but she is still running well,” said Collins. “She had a strong race and was able to earn herself a spot in the top 25.”Collins also complimented the progress he has seen from senior Meaghan Sanders, who placed 28th with a 23:29. Additionally, junior Darya Wilke ran a 26:25 to finish 56th, while junior Emma Housewright took 59th with a 26:55.“Everybody is working hard and has had a good attitude whole season,” said Collins. “Our biggest improvement from last year is Emma, who has taken off several minutes.”Holt, led by Nicole Griesenauer who won the girls race in 20:00.80, claimed the team title with 24 points. Troy was runner-up with 70 points. Warrenton placed sixth with 158 points. In the boys race, Hannibal’s Ayden Nicholas was the fastest runner in 17:03.70. Fort Zumwalt West won the team crown with 31 points. Warrenton finished in fifth with 119 points. The Warriors’ next meet will be at Hannibal on Oct. 8.

Warrenton senior James Goetz placed a team-best 16th at Friday's Warrenton Invitational.

In the girls race, Andrea Poole finished 11th.
